Antiques, Fine Art & Collectables
18 October 2024 @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Lodge and Thomas, The Truro Saleroom are pleased to invite you to view our forthcoming Antiques, Fine Art and Collectables Sale, scheduled for Friday 18th October. As is always the case, we have a huge range of interesting and unusual lots for perusal.
We have a small group of interesting bronzes, consigned by a local vendor. The most impressive of these is a casting of an Arab horseman after Alfred Barye (1839-1882). It shows a proud rider and horse on a naturalistic base and stands 76cm high. Also, within our Works of Art section we have an early unusual coconut cup. Caved with figures hunting exotic animals and a musician, the cup is mounted with a white metal rim entreating ‘Fill it up. We crack no deaf nuts’ together with initials and dated 1735. Such nuts are very collectable and this example is in remarkably good condition, our hope is that it will perform incredibly well on the day. Also consigned locally we are offering an impressive twenty-three light electrolier. Finally, our Works of Art section includes a large late 18th/ early 19th century Carrara marble bath. The lot was acquired by our vendor from the dispersal sale at Tremough Manor, Penryn in 1998. The bath probably first arrived in Cornwall during the development of the Italian garden at Tremough in the 1820’s.
Our ceramics section is also well stocked with fine items. One of note is an early 19th century Flight and Barr ink stand, circa 1807. Finely decorated with shells within glit panels, it is notable as the item appears complete and with no damage. The section also includes several items of blanc de chine. They are of typical figural subjects and mostly of German manufacture dating from the second half of the 19th century. Oriental ceramics and Works of Art are also well represented. We have a pair of Meiji period stem vases in bronze. Of conical form they are supported by a monkey and an elephant and are signed to base with character marks.
Once again, our picture section is wide and varied. There is a strong section of 19th century British and Continental works. These include some classic views of Cornish landmarks such as St Ives but also excellent renderings of the Dutch and Italian coasts. Works by more modern artists include a view of Venice at Sunset by Alan Kingsbury and a view of Mousehole by Julia Rowlands. One of the most exciting works on offer is a watercolour by Terry Frost, dated ‘60, who could be considered amongst the most commercially successful of the St Ives community of artists. Renowned for his prints and lithographs this work is a watercolour sketch in his typically abstract style.
Amongst our selection of watches, we are offering a fine example of a ladies Rolex. Its condition is very good and has the advantage of retaining all the original packaging, including the outer box and sleeve. Other watches include a gentleman’s Breitling Cold Ocean, again retaining its original box and an 18ct gold gentleman’s Longines dress watch.
Currently the auction can be viewed online, and initial responses have been very good. If you were unable to attend the sale in person we would be pleased to bid on your behalf as a commission of telephone bid. Online bidding is also available through both TheSaleroom.com and Easylive.
VEWING DAYS – Wednesday 16th and Thursday 17th October between 10am to 4pm and on sale day from 9am. The auction will commence at 10 o’clock. We are currently accepting consignments for our ‘Christmas’ sale, to take place on Friday 29th November.
