Antiques, Fine Art & Collectables Sale

17 October 2025 @ 10:00 am 5:00 pm

Lodge and Thomas, The Truro Saleroom are pleased to invite you to view our forthcoming Antiques, Fine Art and Collectables Sale, scheduled for Friday 17th October 2025.  We have an intriguing collection of thirty-four boilers and steam engines.  Lots of note within this section are lot 200, a 1.5” scale model of Burrell traction engine, decorated in a traditional livery, a very fine model of a ‘Williamson’ barn engine, lot 188, and a selection of beam engines.  From the same collection was also consigned a Wimshurst influence machine.  First designed and developed by British physicist James Wimshurst in the 1880’s it was a table top machine designed to generate huge electrostatic charges, which discharge as a blue spark between two output terminals.

There has also been much interest expressed in our fashion section.  Of particular note is a very fine Ottoman robe of red velvet and extensively decorated in gilt bullion.  We have received enquiries from across Europe. Other interesting items within this section include a 19th century Surrey smock.  As tradition dictates, it is extensively decorated in white work and smocking designs, but what makes this example particularly charming is that it is signed and dated 1856 using a cursive script on the lower right-hand side.  Whether this was a reference to the owner or to the craftswoman who created the garment we cannot be sure and this is an intrigue which will live on, but it is great to be in a position to positively date the item.

Our jewellery section is also strong with a number of very fine diamond rings.  Lots to look out for are Lot 651, an 18ct gold diamond ring with a navette-shaped stone, Lot 649 a solitaire diamond ring set in platinum and a similar, Lot 648, set in 18ct yellow gold.  Other interesting jewellery items include Lot 656, a Victorian 18ct gold mourning ring and a selection of sovereigns and 22ct commemorative coins.  With the price of bullion marching to ever-increasing heights, we can be sure our jewellery will return some outstanding results.  We are still offering 0% commission to vendors who would like to consign gold for our Christmas sale in November.

We have a fine and broad selection of paintings. There are thirteen works by the ever-popular local artist Steve Camps.  Also, increasing in popularity, are works by Jan Merrick Horn.  His charming renditions of mackerel are much sought after.  In addition, there are a number of works by artists of international standing.  These include Lots 775 and 776 by Sandra Blow and Lots 757-790 by Julian Opie.  Pictures of a more traditional style include a fine landscape incorporating a castle, by Charles Murray Ince and a watercolour and pencil sketch of a beach west of Whiby by John Sell Cotman.

The furniture section concludes our auction.  Highlights include Windsor chairs, Lots 940 and 941, also Lot 920 a very fine elm six plank coffer.  For those who prefer a more contemporary look, we have included a Le Corbusier LC4 chaise longue.  A personal favourite of our auctioneer, it belies the fact that the original design was created nearly a hundred years ago, in 1928.

Our final sale of the year will take place over two days, the 27th & 28th of November.  We hope that by holding the sale over two days we will be in a position to offer a greater number of lots.  It should be noted by those wishing to consign that we have a number of lots already with us, and sale sections are filling fast.

VIEWING DAYS – Wednesday and Thursday between 10am to 4pm and on sale days from 9am.  The auction will commence at 10am on Friday .
