Once again, our sale has a broad cross-section of lots to suit almost any taste. As early on as lot 2 we have one of the more charming lots, namely an early 20th century pond yacht. This item has all the hallmarks of a labour of love. Clearly scratch built, but with skill and an understanding of what makes a boat ‘right’. A traditional gaff rig, and the boat comes with box stand, to allow the vessel to be fettled with prior sailing with a competitive estimate of £100-150 the boat is essentially ready to set sail immediately. Also appealing to a collector’s market is an interesting group of automobilia. Lot 55 is an extensive collection of motoring posters. Some are ‘educational’ in nature and include BMC exploded diagrams of engines, gearboxes and running-gear from a variety of their vehicles. Others include James motorcycle lubrication charts and other exploded diagrams. Further to these we have three chrome car mascots. One of which, known the world over, epitomises quality and the ‘English’ way of life, it is an edition of the Charles Sykes design for Messrs Rolls and Royce. The Spirit of Ecstasy has appeared above the radiator of every Rolls Royce since its inception. Another mascot, almost as well recognised the world over is a Jaguar radiator finial. This particular example is in the rarer, earlier, format as it is casted with spots, rather than the more modern examples which are smooth skinned. The final radiator adornment is the ‘Speed Nymph’ designed by Augustine and Emile Lejeune for Aibert Automobiles. All three represent an excellent opportunity to secure an interesting piece of automotive history.
Our picture section is as strong as ever and has an interesting cross-over from the automobilia market. We will be offering an original artwork by Alexander Stuart-Hill. Commissioned by Shell, it was used in advertising, and had formed part of Shell’s marketing director’s personal collection of advertising ephemera. The poster shows the Penlee Quarry railway with Mousehole in the background, which should appeal to local as well as automotive collectors. Other works, by more contemporary artists of international renown, include Tracey Emin and Julian Opie.
An additional lot for local collectors is a very fine early 19th century longcase clock by (William) Uglow of Truro. The clock has a lovely early painted dial that includes a date aperture and subsidiary second dial. The inlaid case in finely finished with a good strong colour. Our watch section also includes a very fine automatic gentleman’s wristwatch by Tudor. The watch has its original presentation box together with its papers. It is a very fine timepiece and is the shrewd watch buyer’s alternative to a Rolex.
As always, our sale concludes with our furniture section. On this occasion it includes two of our auctioneer’s favourites. The first being a ‘Sussex’ chair, designed by the architect Philip Webb for Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co. It rapidly became a very popular furnishing item and was produced continually from the 1860’s to the 1920’s. This example is one from the earlier production period. The other favoured lot is also a chair, and equally inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement. Know as a Clissett chair, the design was promoted by the notable designer of the Art and Crafts movement Ernest Gimson. Again, this chair has become a design classic and represents an excellent opportunity to buy a very fine example of its type.
We are now collecting items for our auction on 17th October and would be delighted to advise our clients on consigning for this sale.
VEWING DAYS – Wednesday and Thursday between 10am to 4pm and on sale days from 9am. The auction will commence at 10am on Friday 5th September.
